frills and frufru

i'm obsessed with edging!- i've been making collars and necklaces but they are all practice. i don't really know how to read a pattern because i'm untrainable by book. little by little my mom has been teaching me new stitches she learns at her crochet circle.
i started by just using a single and double crochet and playing, manipulating the shape on a whim just using those stitches.

i've been pretty happy working that way, but i just took out a book from the library called "Crocheting on the Edgde" by Nicky Epstein

and i just lay in bed and look at it one page after the other. i'm jealous of the exactness and intriacies of the patterns that are able to achieve a precise look and feeling.

some by me
this last one is turquise cotton and a creamy pink and grey alpaca. this is the latest stitch i've learned, the cluster stitch and i love it! i'm going to tie the ends with dark grey skinny satin ribbon to make an adjustable headband.

my inspiration

my mom gave me this vintage apron for christmas. it'a been hanging above my bed and there isn't a day that i don't stare at it for at least a moment. i didn't appreciate this thing very much at all until it was displayed to me like this. it is narrow and all handknitted, the colors subtle, and the waist tie is a lovely intricate but surprisingly strong cotton lace. sometimes i'm getting dressed and think how nice this would look over what i'm wearing, like almost everyday.

anyway, seeing it constantly has seeped into me, feeding my creative juices. first of all i'm very into hanging even crocheted artwork on the wall. it's helping to give me a clear vision of where i'd like to go and what i'd like to improve upon.

folk

I've been highly attracted to folk art designs lately. Flowers are incorporated into so many of the items I've been picking up lately.
I think it was my yearning for Spring that's been attracting me to them.
We have a bunch of new items up that have a similar thing going on...

rhubarb

It's amazing to see the earth snap suddenly into action recognizing that Spring is here.
We had a slew of rhubarb plants that were accidentally cut down last year and it is actually exactly what they needed. They are at least 5 years old and were getting stringy and staying green all year (though they are a red variety of rhubarb). Everyday a new bright green rhubarb leaf pops out of it's shiny red bulb. Some stalks are already well on their way.
